Alejandro Mayorkas impeachment proceedings in the Senate

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis said he expects Senate leadership to move to table the articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas rather than dismiss them, since they were unable to reach an agreement on a motion to dismiss.

He told CNN he believes that this will make the proceedings today move much more quickly and said Democratic leadership hopes this will be an easier vote.

CNN has reached out to Senate Majority Lead Chuck Schumer’s office, and they confirmed there is no agreement yet.

“I think since the offer was rejected, I’ll be surprised we do a motion to dismiss,” Tillis said. “I think Schumer is more likely to do a motion to table, because they think, politically, they can deal with that better.”

He emphasized that with a motion to table, Republicans will have fewer options to slow down the proceedings.

“This is gonna be a lot shorter than it would be if some of my colleagues in my conference had accepted a deal where we had to debate for a couple of hours, that I think would have been more productive, but this should go fairly quickly,” Tillis said.
