Blue Jays’ Ricky Tiedemann pulled after 1.2 innings in second triple-A start of season

Toronto Blue Jays top prospect Ricky Tiedemann didn’t make it out of the second inning in Friday’s game against the Worcester Red Sox.

Pitching in his second game of the season for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Tiedemann walked four batters over 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and two runs while striking out none before being lifted from the game.

Originally scheduled to pitch on Thursday, Tiedemann had his start pushed back due to back-to-back days of cancelled games thanks to snow in Worcester, Mass.

He threw 44 pitches — 19 strikes — and struggled with his command during the outing. According to Baseball Savant, he mixed in 25 fastballs, 15 sweepers and four changeups in the game.

His fastball averaged 95.5 m.p.h and topped out at 96.9 while his sweeper averaged 81.1.

Tiedemann left with the bases loaded and Paxton Schultz replaced the 21-year-old southpaw, forcing a ground out to get the Bisons out of the jam and keep the score 2-1.

The temperature at first pitch was around 5 C, marking the second straight start Tiedemann has made in the cold.

In his first start, Tiedemann pitched 2.2 innings, allowing just one run with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in Buffalo.

Tiedemann is ranked as the No. 29 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline and No. 22 by Baseball America.

In 2023, Tiedemann threw 62 innings across three minor-league levels and the Arizona Fall League (AFL). He finished the MiLB season with a 3.68 ERA, 82 strikeouts and 23 walks.

At the AFL, he was named the Pitcher of the Year, allowing just five runs over 18 innings of work while racking up 23 strikeouts.

The Bisons are making up for one of the cancelled games by playing a doubleheader on Friday. Right-hander Andrew Bash is scheduled to start the second half.
