Canada’s Homan defeats Switzerland’s Tirinzoni to win gold at women’s worlds

Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based team of Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes defeated four-time defending champion Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 7-5 to win gold at the world women’s curling championship on Sunday in Sydney, N.S..

Homan made a key split for three in the ninth end to take a 7-5 lead into the 10th.

Homan’s win was her first world title since 2017 in Beijing and ended Canada’s six-year drought at this event. Canada’s last win was in 2018 when Jennifer Jones was victorious in North Bay, Ont.

Homan, who’s now 62-6 on the season, beat Tirinzoni in round-robin play to end the Swiss skip’s 42-game winning streak at this competition.

With Sunday’s win, the Canadian now has a 24-8 all-time record in games between the two skips and has won all five head-to-head meetings this season.
