Vikings Coach Makes His Thought Clear About Re-Signing Kirk Cousins

The biggest name in the quarterback market this offseason is Kirk Cousins, who is hitting free agency with a recovering torn Achilles and no shortage of suitors for his services.

After six years and one playoff victory, it’s fair to wonder if Cousins has played his last snap in Minnesota.

According to Head Coach Kevin O’Connell, if it were up to him, Cousins would be wearing purple and gold a lot longer as he said on the NFL Network at the Combine, “I know Kirk is going to go through a full process. He’s a process guy. And hopefully we continue to be a strong part in that process and we figure out a way to keep him a Minnesota Viking.”

The Vikings currently sit with just over $41 million in cap space according to Spotrac, so making the money work shouldn’t be a holdup in a potential Cousins reunion.

The real question is if the team has enough conviction to commit long-term to a soon-to-be 36-year-old quarterback with a torn Achilles who has delivered one playoff win in his career.

O’Connell also pointed out in his response to the question about Cousins’ future that there will be teams lining up at the door for Cousins, so the decision is not ultimately up to the Vikings.

If Cousins were to move on, the Vikings become another team entering a wide-open quarterback market.

They have the 11th pick in the draft as well as some additional late-round ammo at their disposal in the form of two fifth-round picks and two sixth-round picks if they opt to move up for one of the coveted rookies in this class.
