Canada’s Jared du Toit leads Malaysian Open, in line for British Open berth

Canadian golfer Jared du Toit leads the Asian Tour’s season-opening Malaysian Open by one stroke heading into the fourth and final round.

Du Toit, who earned Asian Tour membership at qualifying school prior to this season, shot a 9-under 62 in the third round to go to 17 under for the tournament. The Canadian, one shot ahead of Australia’s Kevin Yuan, hit all 14 fairways on Saturday.

The top three finishers will earn a big prize — a spot in the British Open at Royal Troon in July. Du Toit is three stokes in front of the four golfers tied for fourth.

“Everything was working, just one of those,” du Toit said of his third round in an interview with the Asian Tour.

The 28-year-old Du Toit, from Kimberley, B.C., hasn’t been able to crack the top tours since turning pro in 2017.

Du Toit made national headlines in 2016 when he was one stroke off the lead heading into the final round of the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open as an amateur. He ended up finishing in a tie for ninth.

Du Toit won a PGA Tour Canada event in Calgary in 2021.

“It’s going to be a tough one,” du Toit said of the final round. “I’m going to be nervous for sure. I’m really excited for the challenge. Hopefully I can kind of keep doing what I’m doing. I’m sure there will be more people watching than just my girlfriend. But it’ll be fun.”
