Mexican giant Grupo Bimbo plans to shut down a baking plant in the US by April.
The closure of the Albuquerque plant, Bimbo’s only facility in New Mexico, will see 149 employees affected. The factory bakes bread and buns.
In a statement, Bimbo Bakeries USA (BBU), Grupo Bimbo’s US division, said “volume loss, as well as the aging facility, made this bakery inconducive to our company growth plans”.
The company plans to shift production to other bakeries in the company’s manufacturing network, although a representative could not tell Just Food which sites at the time of writing.
“This was a difficult decision because of the highly engaged team of associates at the Albuquerque Bakery,” said Jessica Santiago, regional director of operations at BBU. “We value and respect our associates and will assist them as we can.”
According to its website, BBU operates 59 bakeries across the US with around 20,000 associates and over 700 sales centres. It produces brands such as Thomas Breads, Sara Lee and Lender’s Bagels.

Last October, Grupo Bimbo snapped up smaller US peer Mile Hi Bakery. The company described Mile Hi Bakery as a supplier of “buns and English muffins for the QSR channel”.
In 2022, the group announced plans to build two new factories in separate US states. The plans for the sites in Georgia and Ohio were revealed in statements signed off by the individual state governors, with the projects expected to create more than 600 jobs in total.
Last week, it emerged Grupo Bimbo plans to close a manufacturing facility in Spain.
According to Spanish trade union CCOO, the factory in El Verger, a town close to Alicante, employs 90 people.
