Playoff Takeaways: Kraken get full team effort vs. Stars, spoil Pavelski’s career night

Until they eliminated the Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, the Seattle Kraken‘s most incredible accomplishment this season was constructing a 100-point campaign despite some of the poorest goaltending in the National Hockey League.

Starting goalie Philipp Grubauer’s .895 save percentage ranked 40^th among 52 goalies in the league who logged at least 25 games. One of the 12 guys behind him was Kraken teammate Martin Jones, whose .887 save rate was 48^th.

But the sub-par goaltending was evidence of how strong the Kraken actually were as a team. They outscored opponents by 49 goals at five-on-five and profiled as an elite team at even-strength. And now that Grubauer is giving them excellent playoff goaltending, the Kraken are playing like an elite team.

It was Dallas Star Joe Pavelski’s night on Tuesday when he scored four times, but it was still the Kraken’s game as the second-year team won 5-4 on Yanni Gourde’s overtime goal to take a 1-0 lead in the teams’ Western Conference semi-final.

It was Seattle’s fourth win in five games since the Kraken took over their first-round series against the Avalanche.

Seattle scored 18 times in that seven-game win and the Kraken got goals from 15 players, which says everything you need to know about coach Dave Hakstol’s team. On Tuesday, five different players scored: Gourde, Jordan Eberle, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Justin Schultz and Jaden Schwartz.

And while Gourde’s winner at 12:17 of OT was opportunistic, as the two-time Cup winner with the Tampa Bay Lightning spun and fired a standing puck over Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger’s shoulder from a sharp angle after Gourde’s attempted pass bounced back to him off Star Wyatt Johnston, there was nothing lucky about Seattle’s win.

They may have blown a two-goal third-period lead, but the Kraken outskated and outplayed the Stars. Shots were 44-35 and hits 47-19 for Seattle, whose speed and forechecking pressure gave Dallas a pile of problems. The Stars, as the Avalanche discovered, have their hands full with the many-tentacled Kraken.

FOUR-LORN

It would have surprised no one had Pavelski scored his fifth of the game to win it in OT for Dallas. The 38-year-old, who has logged more playoff games than any American without winning the Stanley Cup, landed the quad despite just returning to the Dallas lineup after suffering a concussion on a hit by Minnesota defenceman Matt Dumba in the Stars’ opening game of the playoffs on April 17.

Pavelski scored on a wrister from distance, a rebound and a pair of all-world tip-ins, the second one tying the game with 6:37 remaining in the third period. Pavelski is regarded as the best puck-tipper in the NHL, one of the best ever at this particular piece of tradecraft.

“Joey’s dragging everyone into battle,” teammate Max Domi said in a walkoff interview after regulation time. “That’s what leaders do and he’s one of the best in the world.”

Speaking of one of the best, when Maurice (Rocket) Richard scored all of his team’s goals in the Montreal Canadiens’ 5-1 playoff win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1944, he was named the game’s first, second and third star. It would have been beautiful to see Pavelski so-honoured had he managed a fifth in OT.

Of course, Pavelski would far rather win a Stanley Cup about six weeks from now. Richard won eight of them.

ANGRY JOE

Sportsnet’s cameras caught Pavelski visibly upset at the Dallas bench after scoring his third goal to bring the Stars within one, down 4-3, halfway through the third period. After a lengthy delay due to a hat-storm inside American Airlines Arena, Pavelski stepped back on the ice, apparently expecting to be part of the re-start. But he was sat back down on the bench despite his hat trick and rest between shifts. Pavelski logged just 4:25 of ice time in the third period, although he did finish with 19:29 of time on ice in his first game in two weeks.

It’s easier to hit people on the forecheck in the offensive zone, so some of the Game 1 physicality was territory-based.

The Kraken surprise opponents with their physicality and, especially, a big, rugged defence that doesn’t seem to fit the image of a fast, swarming team. But Seattle’s forwards are all about speed and sneaky-deep skill. If the Stars are going to win this series, they’ll have to do better than the Avalanche did at slowing the Kraken. Perhaps, the Stars should try hitting them more often.
