$1.3 Million Homes in California

Bungalow Heaven is a neighborhood beloved for its wide streets lined with early 20th-century homes that retain many of their original features. This one, which has been well maintained by its current and previous owners, has a number of intact original details, including a cast-stone fireplace with an intricate relief depicting Mission Santa Barbara.

The property is a few blocks from a busy stretch of East Washington Boulevard with a bakery and an espresso bar. Old Pasadena is 10 minutes away by car. Burbank and the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains are a 15-minute drive.

Size: 1,320 square feet

Price per square foot: $984

Indoors: A paved path leads from the sidewalk to the slightly elevated covered porch.

The front door opens into a living room with original maple floors, a box-beam ceiling and a cast-stone fireplace. Through a wide doorway is a dining room with wood paneling on the walls and windows facing the side yard.

The sunny kitchen behind the dining room has original cabinetry painted white and a glossy white enamel range. A laundry room with a side-by-side washer and dryer is around the corner, along with a door to the backyard.

Two bedrooms are off the dining room. One has backyard-facing windows and an attached half bathroom; the other, which could serve as the primary bedroom, has a windowed nook big enough to hold a comfortable chair or a desk. An updated bathroom with a porcelain pedestal sink and a combined tub and shower sits between the two bedrooms.

The third bedroom is off the living room, behind original pocket doors. It has street-facing windows and enough space for a queen-size bed and a desk.

Outdoor space: The backyard is landscaped with mature trees and native plants, and has enough space to accommodate a garden and a sitting area. The detached garage at the back of the property holds two cars.

Taxes: $16,236 (estimated, but the home is eligible for reduced property taxes under the Mills Act)

The sellers, a designer and photographer, bought this house in 2021 and renovated it, painting the rooms in striking colors and updating the bathrooms and kitchen. It comes with a solar system that keeps energy costs lower than average during the hot summer months.

The property is in the Sunrise Park neighborhood, a little more than a mile from Palm Springs High School and a public library. Palm Springs International Airport is a few blocks away; downtown Palm Springs is a five-minute drive.

Size: 2,220 square feet

Price per square foot: $586

Indoors: A wood gate set in a long privacy wall facing the street opens into an entrance courtyard with a tiled fountain.

The front door opens directly into the living room, which has saffron-yellow walls, Saltillo-tile floors, beamed ceilings, tall windows and glass doors that offer access to the pool area. The tile floors continue through a wide archway into a dining area with hot-pink walls.

The kitchen, which is open to the living room, has wood counters, white cabinetry, a courtyard-facing window and blue-and-white-tile along the front of the breakfast bar. A laundry room is off the kitchen, behind a vintage Spanish-style door.

A hallway off the living area leads to the primary suite, which has a bedroom with deep green walls and a bathroom with a walk-in shower lined with yellow Zellige tile. Off the same hallway is a guest room that has walls papered in a citrus-tree pattern with a hot-pink background; it has the use of a bathroom across the hall, which has an open shower tiled in purple.

The third bedroom, painted a deep blue, is off the dining room; the attached bathroom has sage-green walls and green Zellige tile lining the combined tub and shower. All three bedrooms have direct access to the pool area.

Outdoor space: In addition to the front courtyard, the property has a shaded area in the back, next to the pool, that the sellers use for outdoor dining. The pool deck is paved, with ample space for sunbathing. The driveway has room to park three cars.

While ski season is among the Lake Tahoe region’s busiest, the other months are busy as well, and Tahoe Donner, a planned community established in 1969, offers year-round amenities, including downhill and cross-country skiing trails, a golf course, a beach on the banks of Donner Lake and an equestrian center. This house, which is part of the community, was updated by the owners and is being sold fully furnished.

It is about a 15-minute drive from the shops and restaurants in downtown Truckee and from Truckee Tahoe Airport. Reno, Nev., the largest city in the area, is about a 45-minute drive. Sacramento is two hours away.
