Joe Sakic was named the NHL’s general manager of the year at the 2022 NHL Draft, following a season in which he oversaw a Stanley Cup champion.
The award, which is chosen by the general managers and a panel of executives and media on a vote held after the second-round of the NHL playoffs, is named after the late Jim Gregory, who served in a variety of executive roles over more than four decades in the NHL.
Sakic led the Avalanche to the best regular season record in franchise history, with a 56-19-7 mark that was first in the Western Conference and second overall. He was aggressive at the trade deadline in adding key playoff contributors Josh Manson, Artturi Lehkonen and Andrew Cogliano in deals to help get his team over the top.
The other finalists for the award were Julien BriseBois of the Lightning and Chris Drury of the Rangers.
