For the second time in three years, a backup quarterback has led the Toronto Argonauts to a stunning Grey Cup title against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Nick Arbuckle was steady at the helm as the Argos beat the Bombers 41-24 in the 111th Grey Cup on Sunday in Vancouver.
Arbuckle connected on 26 of 37 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions in the championship game. He replaced Chad Kelly late in the East final after the starter suffered a gruesome leg injury.
In 2022, it was Kelly who entered midway through the championship game to guide Toronto past a favoured Winnipeg side.
Now, Arbuckle has done the same.
The loss marked the Bombers’ third straight Grey Cup defeat following back-to-back championships.
The Argos won their record-extending 19th CFL title and are now 8-0 against the Blue Bombers in Grey Cup matchups.
