Mets’ Winker, Brewers’ Adames exchange words after triple

New York Mets designated hitter Jesse Winker and Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames may not have been best of pals during their time as teammates.

The two players jawed at each other after Winker’s game-tying triple on Tuesday in the second inning of Game 1 of the National League wild-card series.

After the Mets’ 8-4 win, neither player elaborated on exactly what was said.

“I don’t know what was going through his head, but he just started saying some stuff. I just said something back. I think that’s just the kind of player he is. It is what it is,” Adames told reporters, per the New York Post.

Winker also offered little to reporters.

“I don’t really want to speak on it, I just want to focus on the game tomorrow,” he said.

Winker and Adames were teammates on last year’s Brewers squad.

Winker struggled badly in an injury-plagued 2023 for the Brewers, slashing a career-worst .199/.320/.247 in 61 games. He was booed by Brewers fans as he returned to the roster for last year’s wild-card series.

On Tuesday, Winker said he was “fired up.”

“It’s what you play the game for, to help a team win a game in the playoffs. It’s so much bigger than yourself. It’s bigger than all of us. There’s a ton of emotions for sure,” he said, per MLB.com.

Winker, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., signed a minor-league contract with the Washington National before this season and then was dealt to the Mets at the trade deadline.

Watch Game 2 on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+.
