It’s been years since the Pittsburgh Steelers had a good quarterback situation.
The final years of Ben Roethlisberger’s career weren’t pretty to watch, and they’ve had subpar signal-callers ever since.
Mitch Trubisky, Mason Rudolph, and Kenny Pickett all failed to carry his torch, and it’ll now be up to Russell Wilson to do so.
Needless to say, that would’ve been great news five or six years ago.
But if he’s the version of Russell Wilson we last saw with the Denver Broncos, the fans have a lot of reasons to be worried and discouraged about Mike Tomlin’s decision to roll with him.
However, that was the right call by the organization, at least according to Stephen A. Smith.
Talking on ESPN’s First Take, Smith explained that, this way, the Steelers will give Justin Fields time to grow.

He argues that they know that Fields might be the future of the organization, so they’re protecting him by giving him more time to develop.
Smith stated that if Fields were the starter and struggled right out of the gate, that could’ve been an issue, mostly because Wilson would’ve then been asked to be the savior.
And since no quarterback stood out in training camp, it made sense to roll with the veteran.
That makes sense, assuming the Steelers actually believe Fields could be their guy for the future.
Whatever the case, this debate will most likely be a season-long conversation, regardless of who’s under center by the end of the season.
