The Carolina Hurricanes locked down one of their unrestricted free agents on Thursday.

Defensemen Jalen Chatfield has been re-signed to a three-year, $3-million AAV deal, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Since joining the Hurricanes in July 2021, the 28-year-old has impressed on the blue line, adding speed and consistency to the team’s defensive structure.

The former Canuck also stepped up during the 2023-24 NHL playoffs, where he recorded two assists in 11 games.

During the regular season, the Michigan native tallied eight goals and 14 assists in 72 games, and was especially solid in possession.

Over the last three years, Chatfield has been making the league minimum, so this new deal is a hard-earned boost not just for Chatfield himself, but also for the Canes’ defensive future.
