The Los Angeles Lakers expect to hear from UConn’s Dan Hurley over the next 24 hours about whether he will take the job as the team’s new head coach and successor to Darvin Ham.

At this point, it is anyone’s guess whether he will make the jump to the NBA level or return to the Huskies to try to win a third straight National Championship.

In the event that Hurley chooses to stay at UConn, the Lakers will have to figure out another course of action, which will likely be to hire JJ Redick as their new head coach once the NBA Finals is officially over and he’s no longer calling games for ESPN.

Although Redick might emerge as the favorite if Hurley passes on the opportunity, it seems another candidate has emerged over the weekend, with former Villanova head coach Jay Wright being named as a possibility, according to NBA insider Marc Stein via Bleacher Report.

“I had been warned early on by one well-placed insider, for what it’s worth, to stay ready in case former Villanova coach Jay Wright emerged as a stealth candidate,” Stein wrote.

Stein concluded: “That backstory is sure to surface sooner rather than later … presumably soon after the Lakers do or don’t land Hurley.”

Much like Hurley, Wright was very successful during his time with the Villanova Wildcats, leading them to four Final Four appearances and two National Championships.

Along with an impressive resume highlighted by the two titles, Wright has already been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame and would be a great hire by the Lakers if they decide to go in that direction with the 62-year-old willing to take on the job in Los Angeles.
