Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to Round of 16 at Madrid Open


Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime is through to the Round of 16 at Madrid Open.

Auger-Aliassime, of Montreal, earned a 6-1, 1-0 walkover win Monday over Czechia’s Jakub Mensik, who retired during the second set.

The 23-year-old Auger-Aliassime fired three aces and won 92 per cent on first serve. He also had zero double faults and converted all three break-point opportunities.

Auger-Aliassime will play the winner between Norway’s Casper Ruud and Cameron Norrie of Great Britain.

Auger-Aliassime is the lone Canadian remaining in contention. Germany’s Alexander Zverev ousted Denis Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., 6-4, 7-5 in Round of 32 action on Sunday. Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur eliminated Montreal’s Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the third round on the women’s side Saturday.
