Zalmhuys Group buys minority stake in Dutch fish peer Anova

Netherlands-based fresh and frozen fish major Zalmhuys Group has acquired a minority stake in local supplier Anova Seafood.

Financial details of the deal were not revealed.

Zalmhuys has taken a minority share in Anova’s processing and sales unit for its fresh and chilled seafood products.

Speaking in a joint statement, both companies said the move will allow them to enter “a new phase of collaboration and growth” and make “a strategic step to consolidate their leadership in the seafood market”.

Established by Constant Mulder and Willem Huisman in 1994, Anova supplies a range of internationally-sourced fish to European retail, foodservice and wholesale customers.

The company handed off its frozen line to the Norwegian supplier Seafood Connection in 2018.

Based in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Dutch province of North Brabant, Anova’s fresh and chilled fish range includes perch from the African Great Lakes, North Atlantic cod, Vietnamese pangasius and saithe from the Nordics. It also sources fish from Dutch waters such as catfish and Claresse.

Just Food has asked Anova to confirm whether it owns any other sites besides ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Describing itself as “a market leader in fresh, frozen, and smoked salmon”, Zalmhuys distributes its products to a global retail, foodservice and wholesale customer base.

The company is comprised of four fresh, frozen and smoked fish brands: Ocean Fish, Affish, Affish Fresh and Het Urker Zalmhuys.

Zalmhuys sources its seafood locally in the fishing village where its headquarters are based in Urk, central Netherlands, as well as internationally, from countries including Vietnam, China, Iceland, Kenya, the Nordics and Scotland.

Commenting on the news, Harm ten Napel, CEO of the Zalmhuys Group, said: “Adding Anova’s experience and product portfolio to our current business sees a lot of potential and will further strengthen our position in the seafood industry. It will greatly contribute to the philosophy ‘all your seafood in one place’.

“With Koen Verburg [commercial director] and Erwin Spook [operations director], who have been leading Anova Seafood since 2019, we bring experienced seafood professionals into our group.

“We are confident in the growth potential that comes from combining our strengths and look forward to a prosperous future together.”
