There are, as of Tuesday afternoon, three winless teams in MLB.
They are the Chicago White Sox, the Miami Marlins, and the New York Mets.
Everyone expected Chicago to be bad in 2024, so that’s certainly not surprising on their end.
However, the Marlins made the 2023 postseason, and the Mets, while not bona fide contenders, were expected to be more competitive this year.
Those two squads being winless qualifies as shocking.
The Mets being 0-4 has them closing in on some embarrassing franchise records.
“This is now tied for the fourth-worst start to a season in Mets history. 1962: 0-9, 1963: 0-8, 2005: 0-5, 1964: 0-4, 2024: 0-4,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

Everything should be explained in context, though.
The Mets entered the majors in 1962, so those three years (1962, 1963, and 1964) they fielded poor rosters.
In 2005, they overcame that horrid start and finished with an 83-79 record.
A year after that, they were playing in the National League Championship Series.
In the grand scheme of things, an 0-4 start means nothing when there are 158 more to play.
However, it exemplifies how difficult the year has been for the Mets.
Their offense has scored one or no runs in three of the four games.
That has actually been the biggest problem: they are currently sixth in MLB with a solid 3.16 ERA so the pitching has responded well.
So far, it’s the bats letting the Mets down.
It’s still very early, so there is more than enough time to recover and get some wins.
The offense needs to show some fight, though, because fans aren’t liking what they are watching.
