Jaelyne Matthews breaks down his recruitment, Miami official visit

Under Armour All-American Jaelyne Matthews is scheduling official visits for June, with the latest official visit now for Miami.

An offensive tackle from Toms River North (Toms River, New Jersey), Matthews is a consensus four-star recruit. ESPN has him as the No. 2 recruit in New Jersey  and is No. 88 player in the nation.

An elite offensive tackle who is one of the best in the nation, he already has official visits lined up for Georgia and Tennessee. This week, Miami became the latest program to be written into Matthews’ calendar.

Saying that “They definitely are an elite program,” Matthews will be taking an official visit to Miami from June 7-9. His relationship with head coach Mario Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal are cited as major reasons for Matthews scheduling the official visit.

“Coach Mirabal and coach Cristobal are amazing coaches, they came recently to the school and talked to me – it was amazing,” Matthews told USA TODAY High School Sports.

“So I feel like our relationship has gotten better. And I’m ready to build with them more and meet the others in the coaching staff and see the University of Miami.”

Matthews pulled in his first offer from in-state Rutgers. He said the Big Ten program will be getting an official visit in June.

Another program getting an official from Matthews is Syracuse. Head coach Fran Brown, hired this offseason, is creating some recruiting buzz.

Matthews will visit Syracuse on May 31.

“Coach Fran Brown and Elijah Robinson (defensive line coach) – those are really the only two reasons I’m putting them into (my recruitment),” Matthews said.

“They changed the program and they’re changing it still. It’s definitely the Fran Brown and Elijah Robinson effect. Emmanual Ross – I grew up with him. He flipped his commitment from Stanford to Syracuse. And, you know, it’s a great program and I’m happy for them. I’m happy for what they’re doing there and I would love to be a part of a program like that.”

As for what Matthews is looking for in his recruitment, he has laid out some very important factors in picking a program.

“I’m looking for the school that academically where I can fit in and they have enough help for me academically wise,” Matthews said.

“I mean, I have to do school that doesn’t mean I love school. So I want to find a school that can help me love with academics. Also looking for a school that can physically help me with lifting and training and becoming better. And also a school that can help me when I get older into a good man. You know, I’m saying be a good person.”

Matthews is planning on majoring in a field like sports science or sports exercise
