Although the San Francisco 49ers made it back to the Super Bowl, they were unable to overcome their back postseason luck as they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.
The 49ers looked like the more dominant team in the first half as they scored 10 unanswered points and had control of the game at halftime.
However, Patrick Mahomes did what he does best and led the Chiefs down the field in both the fourth quarter and overtime to give his team another Super Bowl ring.
Meanwhile, head coach Kyle Shanahan made the surprising decision to fire defensive coordinator Steve Wilks just days after the Super Bowl ended.
Wilks got the defense playing some of it’s best football in the postseason, but it apparently wasn’t enough for him to keep his job.
Joy Taylor was shocked when the news broke and even noted that there was nothing glaring about San Francisco’s defense in Super Bowl LVIII via Speak.
“I don’t remember a moment in the Super Bowl where I sat there and said: ‘Wow the Niners defense didn’t come to play,’” Taylor said.

The 49ers held the Chiefs in check for almost the entire first half, but it was turnovers that eventually led to their downfall.
Wilks’ gameplan worked for most of the evening, and it’s hard to pin the loss on him considering who he was going up against.
However, Shanahan clearly wants to bring the defense back up to elite levels and there should be no shortage of interested candidates for the open defensive coordinator job.
