TORONTO — It ended just how the fans packing the Scotiabank Arena stands would’ve drawn it up: the Toronto Maple Leafs-laden squad winning it all, Auston Matthews crowned as the tournament MVP, his side toppling a group led by the best player in the world.
Still, disappointing as it might’ve ended on the ice, Connor McDavid — the hometown boy, who’s been the star of this 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend — isn’t sweating the missed opportunity to add yet another $1-million cheque to his collection.
“Devastating,” McDavid said, with a chuckle, of the loss to Team Matthews in the All-Star final Saturday night. “Our team went the defensive route, and our defensive system broke down there a little bit. We left our goalies out to dry, and they’ve got some good players over there.”
Needless to say, it won’t be the on-ice portion of the weekend that McDavid or his fellow All-Stars will look back on as they leave Toronto and disperse to their big-league homes. Away from the lights and the cameras, in back rooms buried in the arena and elsewhere around town, it’s the collection of memories made with family and friends over these past few days that figure to stick with them the most.
“I thought it was fun. It’s great to have some family and friends here — they took in all the different events, I know that they’ve been having a blast,” McDavid said. “It’s party weekend for them and a work weekend for us. … But I got to spend a little bit of time with them, which was great. The players had a blast, and I think they did too.”
For first-time All-Star J.T. Miller, while helping represent his surging Vancouver Canucks on this stage meant plenty, what meant far more was getting to do so with his daughter, Scottlyn, who joined him on the ice for Friday’s Skills Competition.
“That’s what makes this weekend special for me — it’s not the hockey,” Miller said. “Being around these players is fantastic, it’s something that my daughter can remember. … To have her around there [Friday night], for her to get a little bit of air-time, I’m going to have to humble her this week for sure.”
Asked whether young Scottlyn had any tips for her dad during his events at the Skills showcase, Miller couldn’t help but crack a smile.

“She kept asking me when it was her turn to do the fastest lap,” he said. “I called her mom and said, ‘Come get her!’”
For others who touched down in Toronto for these three days of chaotic joy that were All-Star Weekend, it was the time with their fellow players off the ice that meant most, the chance to connect with other elite talents in the game, away from the pressures and competition of the regular season.
“Part of what makes this weekend great is being able to meet other guys from other teams,” said All-Star captain Quinn Hughes, who mentioned the collection of signed sticks and jerseys he snagged, which will be going back home with his dad. “The respect that each guy has for each other — there’s so much talent here.”
“It’s just the relationships, the memories of hanging out with the guys, you know, meeting guys that I didn’t know before this,” added Kyle Connor. “Obviously the game is a fun experience — you don’t get to play with a lot of those guys ever, only in the summer a couple times.”

Even for a veteran like Sidney Crosby, who’s played in his fair share of All-Star Games in years past and is no stranger to best-on-best events like these, the chance to bond with fellow leaders of the game isn’t one taken lightly.
“That’s part of the fun. Seeing familiar faces, meeting new guys — it’s a rare opportunity to be able to do that,” said the Pittsburgh Penguins captain. “It’s just getting to see guys, to talk, have some laughs. Obviously, things get pretty serious here in the second half, guys will go to their respective teams and compete. When you’re together like this, you try to enjoy it as much as you can.”
“All these guys here, it’s cool to pick their brains,” said defender Cale Makar, who teamed up with No. 87 on Team MacKinnon this weekend. “Especially a guy like Sid. He was one of my childhood idols growing up. To see the level that he’s still playing at is pretty incredible.”
The All-Stars were granted the rare chance to bond with a few other stars over the past few days, too, with the four squads each granted guest celebrity captains. Central to those theatrics was Stratford, Ont.’s Justin Bieber, who took on a core role in helping his home province host the game’s biggest stars.

And while fans outside the locker rooms saw the Bieber-designed jerseys, his time in the spotlight during the Player Draft, his appearances around town over the course of the festivities, many an All-Star spoke highly of the impression Beiber left on them away from the lights.
“He’s really cool, a real down-to-earth guy,” said Connor. “Just hanging out and talking to a guy like that — he was so humble as well — it was pretty cool.”
Bieber was front and centre again Saturday, taking warmups with his squad, Team Matthews, and relishing every moment.
“I saw him getting dressed in the locker room, I didn’t know he was going to be on the ice,” said Alex DeBrincat with a chuckle. “But it was pretty cool seeing him jet around there, just having a good time. … To see a guy like that just enjoy warmups, to hear him saying ‘This is the best day ever’ — it was pretty cool.”
“You could tell he was just having a ton of fun, he was fist-bumping everybody in warmups,” said Connor. “He loves the game more than anybody, so I’m sure this was an awesome experience for him.”
“He’s so talented, an icon really, and what he’s doing for hockey, what he’s doing for Toronto and Canada as a whole, it’s amazing,” said McDavid of the Canadian singer. “To have him here was really cool. It worked out that his team won — good for them.”
For the rest of the All-Star squads, there was no shortage of memorable moments with their own celebrity captains.
Team MacKinnon had a Canadian musical phenom of their own on their bench, with Calgarian Tate McRae spurring on her squad during the games and serenading the Scotiabank Arena faithful before the night’s finale, too.
Team McDavid authored a comeback win in their first game of the night — all to the credit of comedian guest coach Will Arnett, who fired up the team in cinematic fashion before they hit the ice.
“He gave a speech before the first game that was right up there with some of the best,” laughed the squad’s coach Peter Laviolette. “He’s a real positive guy, a hockey fan. … It’s great for a guy like that to come in, a huge fan of the game, loves the game, and be a part of that.”
Team Hughes was on the other end of such a comeback win, giving up a late goal to Team Matthews in their own first-round tilt, before losing in a shootout. Thankfully, they had Michael Buble on the bench, doing his best to keep the team morale high.
“He was kind of just hugging me every time we got scored on,” said Brock Boeser. “So that was nice to have.”

The Canucks’ All-Star contingent had another guest coach join the fray on Saturday night too, with Wayne Gretzky walking out to join Rick Tocchet and Buble on the staff. At one point, The Great One was in stitches along with Tocchet, chirping Brady Tkachuk mid-game.
“They could see my dad on the other side of the ice — he was giving a thumbs down after my breakaway,” Tkachuk explained later through a wide grin. “They thought that was hilarious. They had a good laugh.”
It’s the moments like those that’ll remain for the players who took part in this hectic three-day stretch, the memories made on the bench and in the room, between all that time spent on the ice and in front of cameras. More than anything else, though, it was simply the chance to get away from the mental grind of the NHL season that these All-Stars relished, before they head back for a high-octane home stretch.
“I think the time off is just good for anyone — physically, but just mentally too, to get away from the game for a bit and kind of regroup,” said Boeser.

“Every single practice, every single day, it’s all you think about,” added Connor. “‘How are we going to get better? How are we going to win games?’ You get a chance to kind of sit back and relax. As a team, we were dealing with a lot of stuff as well. So, it’s a combination of both — taking a reset, and getting focused for the second half.”
Still, mental break aside, memories made aside, when they did take to the ice, under the lights, with an arena full of spectators hoping to witness something they could hold onto, the game’s best delivered what they were expected to — some good games, a final featuring two of the biggest stars in the sport, and something the hometown fans could cheer on, in the end.
“We were here to put on a show,” said McDavid of this All-Star Weekend, on the ice. “And I think we did that.”
