Belgium’s United Petfood has snapped up Netherlands-based De Haan Petfood, a producer of wet dog and cat food.
The Ghent-based private-label dog and cat food manufacturer has not revealed the financial details of the acquisition.
De Haan Petfood, located in Nieuwkoop, produces meat chunks in gravy for dogs and cats. With more than six decades of experience in the production of canned wet food for worldwide export, United Petfood said De Haan Petfood brings “significant expertise” to its family.
“The takeover of De Haan Petfood opens up new avenues in terms of wet food and enables us to keep up with growing demand,” United Petfood said.
Eddy Nijhof, site managing director, will remain with De Haan Petfood following the acquisition to maintain current service levels and business relationships.
“We are pleased to be joining the UP family and we are convinced this will allow us to consolidate our business success,” De Haan Petfood said in a statement. “On a commercial level, we can pool our resources while existing UP clients get access to an experienced manufacturer of canned wet food. We will also be able to share our know-how and experience on an operational level.”

United Petfood operates 19 manufacturing facilities in eight countries and sells in more than 80 countries worldwide.
In February, it took a stake in Turkish peer Lider Pet Food, reportedly the largest pet-food producer in Turkey with 13 different brands, from economy to super-premium.
In December 2022, United Petfood added to its factory network by acquiring two pet-food facilities in Poland and Hungary from US agri-food heavyweight Cargill for an undisclosed sum. Before that, it acquired a factory in south-west France from French food company Neodis Group.
