‘Historic day’: Hockey world celebrates as PWHL opens inaugural season

As we ring in the new year on Jan. 1, we also ring in the PWHL’s first-ever season and game.

With the matchup between Toronto and New York at Mattamy Athletic Centre kicking things off Monday (starting at 12:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet+), fans are celebrating a historic day for the sport and a new chapter in women’s hockey.

Following the inaugural game, the league’s other four teams will open their seasons on subsequent days: Montreal against Ottawa on Tuesday and Minnesota versus Boston on Wednesday.

Featuring the world’s best women’s hockey players, the league is currently made up of 157 players representing 12 countries.

Between all the excitement and anticipation on social media, here’s a glimpse at how some are celebrating the PWHL’s debut.
