Defenceman Charlie McAvoy and forward Pavel Zacha have been placed on injured reserve, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney announced Thursday.
In corresponding moves, the Bruins called up forward Patrick Brown and defenceman Parker Wotherspoon from Providence.
McAvoy suffered an upper-body injury last week against the Buffalo Sabres and hasn’t played since. Zacha suffered an upper-body injury during Saturday’s matinee game against the Arizona Coyotes.
In 21 games this season, McAvoy, 25, has three goals and 14 assists for 17 points. The absence of the six-foot-one, 209-pound blueliner will leave a massive hole for the club to fill.
The de factor No. 1 centre on the team this season after the departures of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, Zacha, 26, has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 26 games.
Brown, 31, has one assist in eight games with Boston this season. Wotherspoon, 26, has one assist in three games with Boston this season.
