Oilers’ Connor McDavid practises outdoors, eyes return for Heritage Classic

The Edmonton Oilers did not confirm Connor McDavid will make his return in the Heritage Classic on Sunday, but it’s sure looking good.

McDavid took part in practice outdoors at Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday.

“We’ll see, but he looked pretty good to me,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said, when asked about McDavid’s availability for the game against the Calgary Flames.

McDavid has been sidelined for the past week with an upper-body injury suffered against the Winnipeg Jets. The initial timeline estimated his return would come after Sunday’s outdoor game, but the Oilers captain resumed skating on Friday and took full practice with the team on Saturday.

Though both teams in Alberta have started the season dismally, McDavid’s return could provide extra motivation for an Oilers team that has lost each game without its captain, sliding to the bottom of the league.

You can watch the Oilers take on the Flames in the Heritage Classic on Sunday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, beginning at 7 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. MT.
