The Denver Broncos are hopeful that this will be the year they return to the playoffs and regain at least some respectability.

Last season was an unmitigated disaster for them, as, despite the arrival of future Hall-of-Fame quarterback Russell Wilson, they finished 5-12 and had one of the worst offenses in NFL history.

Some are doubtful Denver is capable of reaching the postseason, even under new head coach Sean Payton, but analyst Chris Broussard feels they can definitely get the job done, via “First Things First” on FS1.

The meat of his argument is the fact that Wilson was statistically better after head coach Nathaniel Hackett was fired late last season.

Under Hackett, the Broncos were very anemic, and sometimes they even seemed disorganized and unprepared.

He was fired the day after Christmas, and he was replaced by Jerry Rosburg, who was an assistant with them at the time.

When Hackett was the head coach, Wilson played the worst ball of his career, but in two games with Rosburg at the helm, Wilson looked a little more like his old self.

In the season finale versus the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers, the former Seattle Seahawk threw three touchdown passes, something he had done just once up to that point all season.

Payton has a history of coaching high-powered offenses during his days with the New Orleans Saints, and he is reportedly going to unleash Wilson more as a rusher.

Although Wilson has always been one of the best dual-threat QBs around, he hasn’t run for 300 yards in a season since 2020.
