Blue Jays’ Springer, manager Schneider both ejected over called strike

Toronto Blue Jays right-fielder George Springer was ejected from Thursday’s game in Cleveland after arguing a called third strike. His manager followed him shortly after.

The incident occurred in the seventh inning with the count full. Springer, who was 2-for-3 and having another strong day at the plate, kept his bat on his shoulder for a 2-2 pitch from the Guardians’ Trevor Stephan that appeared to dip below the strike zone.

Plate umpire Jeremie Rehak called him out, which prompted an exchange with Springer. Rehak then tossed Springer out as he was walking back to the Toronto dugout, which prompted manager John Schneider to rush out and confront the umpire.

Rehak did not waste much time tossing Schneider, too. Don Mattingly took over the manager’s duties in his place.

The Jays were down 4-3 at the time and rallying.
