The deadline to come to an agreement on a long-term deal with players that were franchise tagged by their teams came and went on Monday afternoon, with star running backs Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley hoping to secure their long-term futures with their respective teams.
Unfortunately, things didn’t go their way on Monday, as neither star back was able to agree to terms on a new deal with their team before the buzzer sounded on the deadline.
After having a career year and putting himself in the conversation for being the best running back in the game last year, Jacobs was banking on the fact he proved himself during the 2022 NFL season, but that didn’t turn out to be the case.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, a deal was not reached between the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacobs on Monday.
The #Raiders and star RB Josh Jacobs did not reach a deal, per me and @TomPelissero, despite extensive negotiations. Now it’s unclear when he’ll show to play on the tag. pic.twitter.com/1vAJE8j6U4

As a result of no deal being reached, Jacobs’ immediate future with the team has now been put in jeopardy, as he’s expected to miss training camp, which will get underway next week.
There’s a chance that talks with the Raiders got ugly enough that Jacobs is willing to sit out the upcoming season, even though he’ll be leaving $10 million on the table by not signing and playing on the franchise tag.
After being arguably the best back in the league last season with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage, Jacobs not getting a new deal is just another indication that running backs are no longer valued the way they used to be despite being extremely productive on the field.
