The San Francisco 49ers shocked the league during the 2021 NFL Draft, selecting Trey Lance with the third-overall pick.

While Lance was highly regarded by some, many across the NFL believed that his lack of collegiate experience was a detriment to his profile.

Regardless of the opinions of him when he was drafted, a recent report asserted that the 49ers’ high regard for Lance is fading.

In a recent podcast appearance, NFL insider Ross Tucker said, “I think they’ve soured on him a little bit.”

Kyle Shanahan, the 49ers’ head coach, is known around the league as somewhat of a quarterback guru.

He helped establish Jimmy Garoppolo as a starting quarterback, who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl.

Even with Shanahan’s track record, however, Lance’s future with the organization could be in jeopardy.

As Tucker went on to ask, “He’s not even good enough to be the backup?”

The 49ers brought in Sam Darnold during the offseason, a third option at the position given the injuries to Lance and Brock Purdy.

Tucker seems to believe that Lance is the third quarterback on the depth chart.

He pointed out that, if the 49ers wanted to give Lance more time to develop, they never would have brought in Darnold.

With the capital of being a third-overall pick, Lance will likely have a longer leash than other players might have.

However, it does look like the organization could turn elsewhere, which is where Darnold and Purdy could enter into the fold.

A week-one starter hasn’t yet been named for the 49ers, but when they do, it could be a sign of what’s to come for Lance.
