Andy Reid became an NFL head coach in 1999, and he has been at the helm of a number of teams that have been very competitive and made the playoffs.

But it wasn’t until 2019, when his Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl, that he started to truly receive recognition as a great coach.

With about a month to go before the start of training camp for the 2023 season, Pro Football Focus has ranked its top-10 coaches in the league, and Reid topped the list.

From 1999 to 2012, Reid coached the Philadelphia Eagles, a team that, in the late 1990s, was struggling mightily.

His hiring coincided with the arrival of quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was the No. 2 pick in that year’s draft.

As McNabb emerged, the Eagles became a competitive team, and they reached the NFC Championship Game three straight times from 2001 to 2003, only to lose each time.

They finally broke through and reached the Super Bowl in 2004 after the addition of talented and mercurial wide receiver Terrell Owens, only to lose to the New England Patriots.

Kansas City hired Reid just prior to the 2013 campaign looking to find some consistent success, and that’s exactly what they got, as they haven’t missed the playoffs since 2014.

Perhaps last season represented Reid’s finest work, as he guided the Chiefs to the best record in the AFC and a second world championship in four years despite the loss of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill the previous offseason.

Now Reid will have a new challenge this fall, as JuJu Smith-Schuster, his most productive wideout in 2022, has moved on to join the New England Patriots.

But no one will be surprised if he keeps the Chiefs at the top of the league without Smith-Schuster, given his past success.
