Canada settles for draw against Guadeloupe after conceding late own goal at Gold Cup

TORONTO – The Canadian men’s team lived and died by own goals in its opening match at the Concacaf Gold Cup on Tuesday night.

Canada looked to have mounted a comeback victory via a fortuitous own goal in the second half before conceding one itself deep into injury time as it settled for a 2-2 draw against modest Guadeloupe at BMO Field.

Canada is No. 47 in the current FIFA rankings. Guadeloupe is unranked – the tiny Island in the Caribbean is an overseas department of France, and as such is not a FIFA member.

Guatemala tops Group D with three points after posting a 1–0 win over Cuba on Tuesday. Canada and Guadeloupe are tied for second with a point apiece. The top two teams in the group at the end of the round robin advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.

While credit must be given to Guadeloupe for its spirited effort on the night, Canada certainly didn’t help its cause, as it lacked cohesion and a cutting edge up front.

Even though they ended the first half with 61.1 per cent possession, the Canadians managed only two shots on target, neither of which tested goalkeeper Davy Rouyard. Only in the second half did the Canadians play with more purpose in attack, with Junior Hoilett producing the best moments of inspiration for John Herdman’s side. His pass which resulted in Lucas Cavallini’s equalizer early in the second half was gorgeous, but it says a lot about Canada that it needed an own-goal to take the lead, and then couldn’t defend it.

Even though Guadeloupe didn’t see much of the ball, it made the most of its limited possession thanks to a dangerous counter attack that Canada struggled to contain all night. Forward Thierry Ambrose broke in on goal after latching onto a Matthias Phaëton through ball and forced a fabulous double save from Milan Borjan early on in the game. Guadeloupe’s persistence paid off when Ambrose took a feed from Jordan Leborgne and then easily turned centre back Steven Vitória inside the penalty area before firing past Borjan.

Defending set pieces has been a longstanding issue for Canada, one that reared its ugly head in the final moments of the match when it couldn’t clear its lines off a corner kick, before Russell-Rowe’s unfortunate own-goal.

“We got done on set pieces and on that last goal. I don’t think we need to concede a goal, but it’s football and concentration because we lacked in those last minutes,” Herdman told reporters after the game.

5 players make their debut for Canada

Only 14 of the 23 players who were part of Canada’s recent Concacaf Nations League team were called for duty at the Gold Cup. The absentees include veteran midfielder Atiba Hutchinson (who retired after the Nations League), Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Jonathan David (Lille), Cyle Larin (Club Brugge) and several other notable European-based players.

This was a strategic move on John Herdman’s part, as the Canadian coach wants to use this tournament to deepen the team’s depth by giving chances to some youngsters. Herdman ended up handing five players their first caps on Tuesday. Defenders Moïse Bombito (Colorado Rapids) and Zac McGraw (Portland Timbers), and midfielder Ali Ahmed (Vancouver Whitecaps) all started, while forward Jacen Russell-Rowe (Columbus Crew) and defender Dominick Zator (Korona Kielce) came off the bench in the second half.

It was a mixed bag from the newcomers. Ahmed was Canada’s man-of-the-match – the 22-year-old added a spark in central midfield and looked quite comfortable on the ball as he lined up alongside veteran Jonathan Osorio. The youngster won 10 out of 13 duels and completed 88.9 per cent of passes, while effectively linking up with wingback Richie Laryea.

Naturally a centre back, Bombito was deployed as a holding midfielder against Guadeloupe and provided Canada with a solid defensive base in front of the three-man back line. Zator entered the game in the 90th minute, so it’s impossible to assess his brief cameo.

McGraw played as the right-sided defender in the back three – he usually plays in the middle of a back four with his MLS club – and he struggled to deal with the pace of Guadeloupe’s attackers. Russel-Rowe was subbed on in the 81st minute but inadvertently scored the equalizer for Guadeloupe in injury time when he redirected forward Thierry Ambrose’s pass across the penalty area past Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

“I think the fans got to see the future. I think that the tournament has opened the window for that opportunity to see those debutants experience a bit of adversity as well as to watch their response under tough conditions,” Herdman said.

“I think that was a bright spot in our game, and we are proud of the way they handled this match – but at the same time there is so much disappointment that we couldn’t get the three points tonight.”

BEST MOMENT OF THE GAME

Canada came out strong at the start of the second half and looked to have won a penalty in the 46th minute when Guadeloupe’s Mickaël Alphonse was judged to have fouled Junior Hoilett inside the 18-yard box. But referee Rubiel Vazquez overturned his decision following a pitch side review of the play after consulting with VAR.

It proved to be only a brief reprieve for the visitors. In the 49th minute, Hoilett stormed down the left side and got in behind Guadeloupe’s defence before squaring a sublime ball across the box with the outside of his foot for Lucas Cavallini to slot home at the far post.
