Senators GM Pierre Dorion listening to offers on ‘multiple players’ ahead of draft

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion has been in regular contact with incoming Ottawa franchise owner Michael Andlauer, including a face-to-face meeting last week.

And while Andlauer awaits NHL board approval before he can officially make decisions on behalf of the Senators, Dorion said in a Zoom call Tuesday that he speaks often with the owner-to-be.

“I met with Michael in Ottawa for a big part of the day – it went very well,” Dorion said. “I think he’s very excited to be the future owner of this team. It’s exciting for us in hockey because we’re dealing with someone that has a passion for the game. We’ve followed up with multiple calls since then.”

According to Dorion, Andlauer is “aware of our plan” as far as taking the next step toward Stanley Cup contention, “and I think it bodes well for our fans and the organization moving forward.”

Among the items of business the pair discussed was the future of head coach D.J. Smith, whose immediate future is secure.

“I made a recommendation to the board a little while back and obviously I consulted with Michael – D.J. Smith and his staff will be back next year,” Dorion said.

“In dealing with Michael he has said that the general manager runs hockey operations and he decides the coach, and my recommendation was for D.J. and his staff to be back.”

The only team that Dorion and Andlauer can’t discuss is the Montreal Canadiens, as Andlauer is still in the process of relinquishing his partial ownership of the franchise.

The business of player personnel moves for Ottawa is more fluid as the draft approaches.

The Senators are widely believed to be shopping winger Alex DeBrincat, a pending restricted free agent who has balked at signing a long term deal in Ottawa.

“Their camp indicated to us that free agency only comes along probably once for Alex in his career and they weren’t ready to sign long term with us,” Dorion said. “At that point in time we decided to go to club-elect arbitration just to protect ourselves.”

While there is plenty of interest in DeBrincat, he may or may not get moved by Wednesday evening, as the first round of the draft plays out.

“Right now, we’re talking to teams about possibly moving him,” Dorion said. “He hasn’t asked for a trade but at the same time we have to do what’s best for the organization.”

Asked about the likelihood of moving up in the draft to secure a first-round pick via trade, Dorion said bluntly: “I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

Chalk it up to the Senators moving out of the rebuilding phase and into fine-tuning.

“We’re a team that’s had multiple first rounders for many years,” Dorion said. “Last year was the first year we didn’t have a first rounder under my tenure, whether as GM, assistant GM, director of player personnel or chief amateur scout.”

Dorion added that after scouting this draft class, he feels it’s not the worst time to be without a first round pick. Ottawa actually has no selections through the first three rounds, subject to change by Wednesday.

“I think there’s always a possibility of a second rounder or third rounder coming into play, but I don’t see us going up to the first round this year,” Dorion said. Ottawa fans will be watching to see if a DeBrincat deal is part of that equation.

Without question, trade talk is building as the NHL GMs spend more time together in Nashville, including at Monday’s awards show and now the run-up to Wednesday’s draft.

“Ever since I got here, I sometimes just want five or ten minutes for myself,” Dorion laughs. “And the phone rings, and you’re bumping into a lot of people . . . general managers and agents and there’s a lot of trade talk going on right now. On multiple players.”

While the Senators have not yet submitted the qualifying papers concerning restricted free agents, Dorion said he is “99.9 per cent” sure who will and will not receive qualifying offers.

Those who will include DeBrincat (club-elect), Shane Pinto, Erik Brannstrom, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Kevin Mandolese and Egor Sokolov. Not qualified: forwards Dylan Gambrell, Julien Gauthier and Viktor Lodin, defencemen Jonathan Aspirot and Jacob Larsson and goaltender Dylan Ferguson.

Gambrell was a useful fourth line player for the Senators last season, appearing in 60 games and chipping in 10 points, including four goals.

Gauthier came over to Ottawa at the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent Tyler Motte back to the New York Rangers. The Sens also picked up a 7th round pick in that trade. In 17 games with the Senators, Gauthier produced three goals and two assists.

Dorion says he will continue to monitor trade possibilities, through this week and into the free agency period, which begins July 1.

Areas of concern include the goaltending position and depth forward, plus a scoring forward if DeBrincat gets moved.

“We’re having pro scouting meetings today and amateur scouting meetings – obviously we are doing a few (draft-eligible) player interviews,” Dorion said. “But I think the next few days of possible trades will dictate what we need when it comes to free agency.”
