Blue Jays’ Guerrero Jr., Bichette, Chapman lead positions in All-Star Game voting

Three Toronto Blue Jays players continue to lead the way at their respective positions in fan balloting for the 2023 All-Star Game.

Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., shortstop Bo Bichette and third baseman Matt Chapman remain leaders in the second update released by Major League Baseball on Tuesday.

Bichette is more than 733,000 votes ahead of second-place Corey Seager of the Texas Rangers, Guerrero is just over 70,000 votes ahead of Yandy Diaz of the Tampa Bay Rays while Chapman is 50,494 votes in front of Josh Jung of the Rangers.

Bichette is trying to become the first shortstop in Blue Jays history to make an All-Star Game start, while Guerrero is trying to nail down his third consecutive ASG start. Chapman was an All-Star reserve with the Oakland A’s in 2019, while Bichette was a reserve in 2021.

The top vote-getter in each league — it will likely be Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani as a designated hitter in the AL — will automatically get a starting spot in the game next month in Seattle when the first phase of voting concludes on Thursday at 12 p.m. ET.

The rest of the starters will be determined in Phase 2 when the top two vote-getters at each position and the top six outfielders are on a final ballot.

Toronto second baseman Whit Merrifield is second to Ranger and former Blue Jay Marcus Semien. Blue Jays designated hitter Brandon Belt is second at his position, while Toronto’s Kevin Kiermaier and George Springer are fifth and sixth, respectively, among outfielders.

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Ocuna Jr. is the leading overall vote-getter.
