Tkachuk stays out of box, propels Panthers to victory after injury scare

SUNRISE, FLA. – If Matthew Tkachuk really wants to hurt the Vegas Golden Knights, all he has to do is play hockey. The evidence was in the Florida Panthers’ desperate 3-2 overtime victory Thursday in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Florida coach Paul Maurice said before the game that discipline was a “touchy” subject for his team, which was like a climate scientist saying global warming is a touchy subject for the Earth.

If only global warming were as easy to fix (or at least acknowledge for some) as discipline. In the two days between the second and third games of the National Hockey League final, Maurice seems to have fixed the discipline problem with Tkachuk.

Florida’s best player, a Hart Trophy finalist this season and one of the best players in the world, Tkachuk spent more time in the penalty box (36 minutes) than on the ice (34 ½ minutes) during the first two games against the Vegas Golden Knights when the Panthers looked a little like 18 Hanson brothers from the Johnstown Chiefs and lost both contests by an aggregate score of 12-4.

No wonder discipline was a touchy subject on which Maurice, at least with reporters after the morning skate, did not much wish to elaborate. Presumably, his discussions with Tkachuk and the Panthers were exhaustive.

In Game 3, Tkachuk’s only timeout was in the quiet room, where he may have felt pain but no shame when tardy concussion-spotters from the NHL ordered him off the ice in the first period after the Panthers’ biggest star absorbed a hellacious-but-legal hit from Keegan Kolesar.

The hit was astonishingly similar to the one Tkachuk delivered with gusto on Vegas star Jack Eichel during Florida’s 7-2 loss in Las Vegas on Monday. Karma is wonderful, except when it works against you.

After Kolesar briefly posed for photos by standing over Tkachuk, the Panthers’ most valuable player stumbled once, made it back to his feet, located his stick and was guided to the bench by a linesman as play continued. Tkachuk was then somehow allowed to play a 75-second power-play shift before he was ordered off the ice under the NHL’s concussion protocol to undergo independent medical testing.

“It’s a complete shutdown,” Maurice described of the procedure. “Goes into a quiet room (and) there’s no checking when you’re coming out. So you are completely in the dark; you don’t know when the player’s coming back.”

Or if. But Tkachuk returned to the Florida bench about three minutes into the second period.

He said afterward: “I knew I was coming back” and declared himself fine.

Turning with the puck inside his zone and not seeing Kolesar coming turned out to be the worst thing Tkachuk did on Thursday.

After becoming a sideshow in Vegas, Tkachuk was a spectacular main event in Game 3, scoring a tying goal with 2:13 remaining in regulation time after setting up an earlier score, then flash-screening Knights goalie Adin Hill when teammate Carter Verhaeghe zipped in the overtime winner as the Panthers won 3-2 to extend their season and make the Stanley Cup Final an actual contest.

The Knights lead 2-1 heading to Game 4 here Saturday.

Tkachuk accomplished all of this without registering a single hit or penalty. He was ferocious anyway – far harder to play against than he was in Vegas. So were his teammates.

“You know what, he’s quiet,” Maurice said after the game when asked what Tkachuk is like on the bench during games like Thursday’s. “I felt there was a really big shift in his, not demeanor, but his approach to the game right around January. If you look at his block of time — not withstanding the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final — he didn’t take any penalties. He’s really kind of, I think, ascended to the idea of how important he is to our team that he has to be on the ice and he has to play.”

There is nothing touchy or debatable about that.

The Panthers have made it this far in the playoffs because Tkachuk has played like a Conn Smythe candidate and Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who rebounded in Game 3 with a marvelous 25-save performance after getting hooked in Game 2, is his nearest rival for the playoff MVP award. It helps also that the Panthers are now 7-0 in overtime during the Stanley Cup tournament.

The Golden Knights are so deep, powerful and sound that the only way for Florida to win is if Tkachuk and Bobrovsky play three or four more games like they did Thursday.

Even Tkachuk knows nobody outside South Florida expects this to happen.

“Like, they all counted us out before the final even started,” he said post-game. “So being in that position (down 0-2) probably added to it a bit. But we’re that type of team where we know what . . . that end-goal wants to be for us. And we don’t know how we’re going to get there, but we know that we’re going to do everything we can to pursue that opportunity to have that. Whether it’s guys playing through stuff or coming back in the game like tonight or being down 0-2, looking back at the whole playoffs, it’s just adversity throughout. The whole season, I should say, not even the playoffs.

It’s not as mysterious as that; Tkachuk gives them a path to victory. But that still may not be enough.

Although they led only 2-1, the Knights controlled most of the game and protected their lead by allowing only four shots through the first 17 ½ minutes of the third period before an extra attacker gave the Panthers a jolt and Tkachuk, with inside position on Vegas defenceman Zach Whitecloud, chipped a rebound into an open net to make it 2-2.
