Caleb Love commits to Arizona basketball, ending transfer portal drama

One of the top players in the transfer portal finally found a new home to “Bear Down.”

Former North Carolina guard Caleb Love committed to transfer to Arizona, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.

Love’s commitment to the Wildcats comes after a whirlwind of a transfer process. Ranked as the No. 16 transfer available this offseason by 247 Sports, Love was one of the most sought after players in the portal after three seasons with the Tar Heels. He originally committed to Michigan, but reportedly decommitted May 18.

Love averaged 16.7 points, 2.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds for the Tar Heels last season.

What Caleb Love means for Arizona

Love will join a Wildcat team that is a national title favorite next season, thanks to another strong recruiting class from coach Tommy Lloyd.

After winning the Pac-12 conference tournament title last season, Arizona was the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and shocked by a first-round loss to No. 15 seed Princeton. The Wildcats finished the season 28-7.

Despite the loss of first-team all-Pac 12 forward Ąžuolas Tubelis to the NBA and guard Kerr Kriisa to the transfer portal, Arizona reloaded with former Alabama guard Jaden Bradley and former San Diego State forward Keshad Johnson, who started for the Aztecs when they made the national championship game last season. Returning for the Wildcats are big man Oumar Ballo, as well as guards Kylan Boswell and Pelle Larsson.

A high-volume scorer, Love is known for being the star of North Carolina’s 2022 run to the NCAA tournament title game, averaging 18.8 points over six games. He will be a key addition on the offensive end to an Arizona team that averaged 81.9 points a game last season, which was sixth in Division I.

Why is Caleb Love transferring?

Love announced his decision to leave North Carolina on March 27.

“I’ve taken some time with my family to re-evaluate what’s best for me to continue to grow as a player and I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal to continue my journey,” Love said on Twitter.

Despite his stellar play in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, Love and the Tar Heels had a disappointing last season. After starting the season as the No. 1 team in the country, North Carolina went 20-13, finished unranked and became the first preseason No. 1 team to miss the NCAA Tournament since the field expanded in 1985.

Why did Caleb Love decommit from Michigan?

Love’s commitment to the Wolverines was brief after he had an admissions issue related to credits transferring to Michigan, ESPN reported.
