Playoff Takeaways: Speedy Kraken showcase depth, force Game 7 vs. Stars

The Seattle Kraken missed the playoffs by 37 points last season, and the year before that did not even exist.

But the National Hockey League’s 32nd team moved within one win of the Western Conference Final on Saturday with a 6-3 victory against the Dallas Stars that evened the second-round series 3-3 and forces Game 7 Monday in Texas.

For a team that plays in the shadow of Seattle’s Space Needle, advancing to the third round of the playoffs would have seemed like a mission to Mars back in October.

But after eliminating the reigning Stanley Cup champion – and prohibitively favoured – Colorado Avalanche in the opening round, the speedy Kraken chased Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger for the second time in the series on Saturday and may prove to be too much for the Stars.

Ask us Tuesday because this series is proving entirely unpredictable with the last four games decided by at least three goals and each team winning twice.

The Stars handily won Games 4 and 5 to seize control of the series and appeared headed to their second conference final in four seasons. But when Saturday’s game mattered most – at the start – the Kraken were simply too fast, too determined and too relentless for Dallas to handle, as Seattle dominated the opening period and led 4-1 before the contest was 25 minutes old.

Typical for a team that does not crush anyone with one line but makes every opponent uncomfortable with four, Seattle’s first five goals came from five different scorers before Jordan Eberle added his second of the game into an empty net with 58 seconds remaining. Matty Beniers, Eeli Tolvanen, Yanni Gourde and Tye Kartye also scored, and 11 Kraken skaters registered at least a point. Seattle has had 18 different goal scorers in 13 playoff games.

Ageless Joe Pavelski, Joel Kiviranta and Mason Marchment scored for Dallas.

STAR POWER(LESS)

Dallas’ key counter-measure against Seattle’s speed and four-line swarm has been the big-play capability of Roope Hintz, Jason Robertson and Pavelski, a top line that is not only better than any Kraken trio but is better than all but three or four other forward lines in hockey. Dallas also has one of the best defencemen in the world in Miro Heiskanen and the best goalie remaining in the playoffs in Oettinger.

But beyond Pavelski’s power-play tip-in for the 38-year-old’s eighth goal of the series, Hintz was pointless and Robertson had only a second assist while his playoff goal-less streak reached seven games, matching the winger’s season-long slump.

After scoring 46 times in a regular season that saw him earn some Hart Trophy votes, Robertson is stuck on two goals for the playoffs.

Two scoring opportunities Saturday perfectly encapsulated his series: in the second period, Robertson was completely unchecked in the low slot but had the puck hop over his stick; and in the third, with Dallas trailing 4-2, Robertson smashed a one-timer off the post.

A game shy of the playoffs’ halfway point, Hintz is the Stars’ Conn Smythe Trophy candidate so far. But if his team is going to continue on to something bigger, Robertson is going to have to start scoring goals.

Eberle and Gourde were two of the bigger names general manager Ron Francis selected in the expansion draft just 22 months ago. Beniers was the franchise’s first-ever entry draft pick, chosen second-overall in 2021. Tolvanen, the Nashville Predators’ first-round draft pick in 2017, was claimed on waivers in December. And Kartye is an undrafted free agent out of the Ontario Hockey League who spent his entire first professional season in the minors until Jared McCann was injured in Game 5 against Colorado. Kartye has scored three goals in nine games since then while generating a team-leading 21.9 hits per 60 minutes.

Beniers is the only guy who gets anyone’s heart racing. But collectively, joined by 15 other believers who skate and hit and move the puck, the Kraken are on the verge of making the NHL’s final four.

Dallas coach Peter DeBoer replaced Oettinger in net when Kartye blew an unscreened wrist shot past the goalie’s short side to make it 4-1 at 4:23 of the second period. Oettinger was beaten four times on 18 shots in the shortest start of his NHL career.
