Gary Sanchez was once a promising young catcher with the New York Yankees.

He made his MLB debut in 2015 and became the Yankees’ full-time catcher two years later.

Sanchez was part of the youth movement in the Bronx that included stars such as Aaron Judge.

The now-veteran catcher’s time with the Yankees came to an end in the spring of 2022 when he was shipped off to the Minnesota Twins along with Gio Urshela in the deal that sent Ben Rortvedt and Josh Donaldson back to the Yankees.

He became a free agent and the San Francisco Giants ultimately signed him before letting him go after he hit just .164 in Triple-A.

However, the New York Mets have now taken a chance on him, signing him to a minor league contract.

On Twitter, a Mets fan reacted to the signing with confusion.

The fan’s confusion stems from the fact that Sanchez is likely not going to be a starting catcher at any point with the team.

They currently have Tomas Nido backing up Francisco Alvarez with Omar Narvaez on the injured list.

Alvarez is considered to be a better defensive catcher than Sanchez.

However, this fan theorized that perhaps the Mets could find a trade partner for Nido and use Sanchez as their backup catcher until Narvaez returns.

Still, Mets fans aren’t exactly sure how Sanchez fits into their plans going forward, if at all.
