Devils’ Meier ruled out, Hurricanes’ Andersen to start in net for Game 1

New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier is out for Wednesday’s Game 1 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Meier was a game-time decision going into the contest.

The winger exited Monday’s Game 7 against the New York Rangers after taking a big hit from defenceman Jacob Trouba.

Meier was cleared to return after being examined following the open-ice hit early in the Devils’ 4-0 win.

The Devils acquired Meier at the trade deadline from the San Jose Sharks. He was considered one of the top players available at the deadline.

Meier did not have a point in the series against the Rangers after putting up 14 points (nine goals, five assists) in 21 regular-season games with the Devils.

On the other end of the ice, Frederik Andersen will start in net for the Hurricanes.

Andersen started Carolina’s series-clinching 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders in Game 6. He was sidelined with an illness the first five games with Antti Raanta starting.

Andersen played 34 games for Carolina in the regular season, while Raanta was in for 27.
