Playoff Takeaways: Schmid shines as Devils jump back into series vs. Rangers

Down two games after stumbling through back-to-back 5-1 losses at home, it was clear heading into Game 3 in New York that the New Jersey Devils needed to make a change if they had any hopes of finding their footing in this series.

While the Devils’ defeats couldn’t be pinned entirely on the performance of Vitek Vanecek considering the club’s sputtering offence shrunk his margin of error to pretty much zero, the starting netminder’s .827 save percentage through two games wasn’t exactly setting the stage for a comeback.

Enter Akira Schmid. Though the rookie netminder didn’t see a lot of ice time this season — he got just 14 starts, compared to Vanecek’s 48 and Mackenzie Blackwood’s 20 — he was quick to impress when he did.

And on Saturday night against a New York Rangers team trying to push New Jersey to the brink, Schmid pushed back. The 22-year-old was calm, cool, and collected over the course of his post-season debut, facing 36 shots and letting just a single puck past him to backstop his team to a 2-1 overtime victory.

Now, if only the netminder could score a few goals to help his team out.

The Devils have been playing fast-paced, high-scoring hockey all season long, averaging 3.52 goals per game through 82 — that’s tied with the Seattle Kraken for fourth highest in the league. And yet so far in these playoffs, goals have been a rarity.

Sure, running into a goalie like Rangers star Igor Shesterkin will suppress even the best offences, but the Devils haven’t been able to muster up much of anything and have certainly not done themselves any favours. They’re sitting last in shots per game this post-season so far (26.7). It took until 11:36 into Game 3’s overtime on Saturday night for the Devils to score their first even-strength goal of the entire series. (Jack Hughes scored the team’s lone Game 1 goal via a penalty shot, Erik Haula’s power-play marker was their only offence in Game 2, and the Devils’ lone regulation goal Saturday night came from Hughes with the man advantage.)

Rangers’ power play falters amid flurry of chances

You need not ask who scored New York’s lone goal of the game. You already know it was Chris Kreider, who simply can’t not score in a playoff game, it seems. The lifelong Ranger made history earlier this series when he became the franchise’s all-time leader in playoff goals and made more history Saturday night with his fifth of the post-season so far.

Kreider had two goals in each of the Rangers’ first two games of this series, with all four markers coming on the power-play. That, too, puts him in history-making territory — two more PPGs and he’ll match the NHL’s single-series record.

But there’s another storyline tucked into this power-play talk… and it’s not a good one for the Rangers. After putting up solid power-play percentages in the regular season, the team was a force thanks to Kreider’s net-front heroics in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with the man advantage. That success rate fell to 2-for-7 in Game 2.

Game 3 brought a goose egg. And it wasn’t for lack of opportunity, with the Devils making several trips to the penalty box — including late in the third period of a deadlocked game — with the Rangers unable to capitalize, finishing 0-for-5.

After scoring just once in a Game 1 loss and barely escaping Game 2 with a 3-2 win to even up the series, the Colorado Avalanche brought a familiar sight to Game 3 in Seattle: Goals! And lots of them.

While it wasn’t the housewarming gift the Seattle Kraken had hoped for in their very first post-season game at Climate Pledge Arena, Colorado’s performance was certainly more in line with expectations ahead of this series, their 6-4 win bringing out all the biggest playmakers.

Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen had two goals each, while Cale Makar got in on the action with a goal and an assist. J.T. Compher, who’s nicely filled the gap left by Nazem Kadri, started off the Avalanche’s scoring with a shorthanded marker in the first period to tie the game after Seattle’s Jaden Schwartz kicked things off.

It wasn’t just who scored for Colorado in this one, though, but how they scored — in bunches, and in MacKinnon’s case, on a breakaway — when they needed it most.

Colorado took its first lead of the game late in the first period just three minutes after tying it up, but the second period saw the momentum shift Seattle’s way when the Kraken scored twice in just 19 seconds to tie the game 3-3. Still gridlocked to start the third, Colorado came out looking like their old selves, scoring two quick goals in just under 90 seconds to take hold of the game. Though Seattle had an answer in the second period, their efforts to equal things in the third ultimately fell short.

So, it appears the defending champions have arrived. But will they stay?

Seattle’s depth, as it has all season long, has been on full display this series while the depth of Colorado is being tested. Another test came Saturday with the absence of forward Valeri Nichuschkin, who wasn’t in the lineup for Game 3 and who will be away from the team moving forward for “personal reasons.”
