Chelsea defender Thiago Silva urges Chelsea to ‘stop and put a strategy in place’ to avoid another poor season next campaign.
After the disappointment of being knocked out of the Champions League on a 4-0 aggregate score by Real Madrid on Tuesday, Thiago Silva did not shy away from the media in an interview where he gave insight into the ongoing situation at Chelsea.
This result has further increased media scrutiny and fan emotivity, with the heavy portion of the blame being attributed to Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.
It has been a bizarre season for the Blues thus far, being unable to compete for any trophies while currently lingering outside of the top 10 in the Premier League, occupying the 11th position with only seven games remaining.
Chelsea’s calamitous season has not been helped by the appointment and dismissal of head coach Graham Potter, as current caretaker Frank Lampard is the fourth man to have led the side this season, more than any other club in the league.
Thiago Silva conveyed a frustrated figure after Chelsea’s exit from the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Club captain Thiago Silva expressed his verdict on the current state of affairs after the defeat at Stamford Bridge, telling TNT Sports: “I think the first step has been made. An incorrect step. but it has been made. We can’t be blaming managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club with a lot of indecision.”
“Change of ownership; new players arriving. We had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad,” said Silva.
Silva also expressed his empathy for Lampard in selecting a team, believing that “a positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad, but on the other hand, there are always players that are going to be unhappy. There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play.
“The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something—that’s tough. Some can’t make the squad; we signed eight in January; we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”
“Everybody talks too much about replacing managers. I think we, as players, must also take responsibility.”
“We have had three managers this season, plus a fourth with Bruno, where we failed to win. We have lost today and with Lampard, we have failed to win. Everybody is talking about the manager, but we must look at what has been done wrong and try to change.”
Legendary Chelsea striker Didier Drogba also gave a serrated judgement on his former club when stating that ‘it is not the same club anymore,’ and claiming “I don’t recognise my club. There is a new owner and a new vision.”
Julian Nagelsmann has recently become the bookie’s favourite to take over from Lampard at the end of the season and if appointed would be tasked with galvanising a group of players that have shown little to no resilience this campaign.
