Milk facts – Just Food

Each year in the UK, 14.3 billion litres of
milk are produced. At farm gate prices, this represents a market worth £31/2 billion.

Half of all produced milk will enter the
liquid milk market, the remainder will go for manufacture into dairy products such as
cream, cheese, butter and yogurt.

The UK market for the five major dairy
products (milk, cheese, yogurt, butter and cream) is worth an estimated £6 billion at
retail prices.

Almost 90% of all household milk purchased
in England and Wales is pasteurised milk. Over the years, there has been a significant
increase in the market share of low-fat milks.

under 2,600,000 dairy cows.

One dairy cow produces 10,000 pints of milk
in a year, enough to supply 26 families with their daily pintas.

14,329,000,000 litres of milk are produced
each year, of which 7,004,000,000 litres are sold for liquid consumption a year.

milk per person per week were consumed. This equates to just under ten pints per week per
household.
