Israel strikes Lebanon and Gaza Strip after rocket attacks: Live updates

Here’s what else to know:

  • Crowds of worshipers attended Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem amid high tensions. The rockets were launched after Israeli police raided the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and arrested scores of Palestinians during Ramadan earlier this week.
  • The Palestinian militant group Hamas issued a statement celebrating the West Bank shooting. The group did not claim responsibility for the attack but warned Israel “against continuing its aggression against our Palestinian people and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.” The Israeli army said it is searching for the gunmen.
  • The latest exchange of rocket fire and airstrikes is among the most serious flare-ups of violence in the region since the month-long war of 2006 that Israel fought against Lebanon’s Hezbollah group. The Israel Defense Forces said it struck Hamas’s “terrorist infrastructure” in southern Lebanon and that Israel holds the Lebanese state responsible for attacks originating from its territory. The Lebanese Foreign Ministry called the Israeli strikes “a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty” and said it was filing a complaint to the United Nations.
