Just as you thought things at Chelsea Football Club would be different under the ownership of Todd Bohely, there are signs of the Roman Abramovic era creeping into the American’s tenure at Stamford Bridge.
Sacking Thomas Tuchel was a shocking decision from the Board especially when they spent a total of £251million, but what was the point in bringing in Potter who was thriving at Brighton and Hove Albion, and then not backing him up with signing a striker to compete with Pierre-Emrick Aubameyang? This was the biggest mistake by Bohely.
When the Blues brought in Potter, you would have thought that the owners would go in the same direction as Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, where he was given time to build his own team and style of play.
But the 2-2 draw with Everton, followed by a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa was the ultimate knockout blow for the 47-year-old, and ultimately led to his downfall at Chelsea Football Club.
And just like ex-Chairman Roman Abramovich, it seems as if Boehly is going down the ruthless approach of dismissing managers midway through a season.
Clearly, this is getting a bit too much for Chelsea fans now, and it’s time for Bohely to come up with a long-term goal for whoever he brings in.
We cannot just simply go back to the Roman Abramovic era, where he demanded success at will, now is the time for us to find the right person for the job.
Whether that person is Julian Nagalsman, Mauricio Pochettino, or Luis Enrique, is another matter to be discussed, but clearly, something needs to be done at Chelsea so that they can allow managers time to impose themselves on the team and build a squad with a winning mentality like Mourinho, Conte, and Tuchel tried to implement during their reign at the club.
The most frustrating thing is that if you keep axing and appointing managers, some of them may fear that the minute things go wrong in terms of results, it could be curtains for them, so they start to think twice before making the move. i.e “if results don’t go in my favor, then it could be curtains for me.” “If that’s the case, do I really want this job?’ That’s where pretty soon people may be scared to take up the role.
Chelsea faces Liverpool on Tuesday evening and Bruno Salter(Potter’s Assistant) is expected to be in charge of the squad. With Ten games remaining in the Premier League, plus a Champions League Quarter Final with holders Real Madrid, it’ll be fascinating to see how the rest of the season plans out for the Blues.
