Jorge Masvidal has claimed he has ‘insider information’ which suggests that should he win his next fight, he will be the number one contender for Leon Edwards’ title.
This is contrary to the name UFC President Dana White put forward as the next title contender, with White naming Colby Covington the No. 1 contender, in the aftermath of the battle at UFC 286 between Edwards and Kamaru Usman.
Edwards’ wasn’t particularly keen on a Covington match-up, arguing that the American want deserving due to his lack of activity as of late.
Instead, Edwards indicated he wanted to see how the Masvidal and Gilbert Burns fight at UFC 287 on April 8th plays out, before he commits to an opponent.
Rocky and Gamebred have a history, stemming from a backstage incident at a UFC London event in 2019. Masvidal attacked the Brit backstage after his interview was interrupted, sparking the famous “three-piece and a soda” line which is not tied at the hip with MMA.
Masvidal is confident that his next fight with a win over Burns will be against the champion.
“I’m fighting Gilbert, then I’m fighting Leon,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie Radio.
“I’m telling you that’s how it’s going to play out. I just got some insider information.”
Masvidal hopes his upcoming performance will impress fans to the point where he is the clear favourite to get the Edwards fight.
“I’m eager to get in there with Gilbert and utterly dismantle him to the point that everybody is begging for me to go and fight Leon,”
Masvidal continued, “I know Leon’s not an idiot. He’s already fought before and defended the title and stuff, and he knows what a guy like me brings to the table besides the added beef that we have and the amount of pay-per-views we can generate together fighting for that title. I think it’s epic. It’s a movie ending for me and everybody involved with me.”
Gamebred sees Burns as a stepping stone to bigger things, insisting his skill level is far superior to his opponent.
“This chapter (of my career) would be called: Gilbert ‘The Stepping-Stone’ Burns,
“It’s no diss to Gilbert. I think he’s a good competitor and he comes to fight and stuff like that for the most part, but we’ve never been on the same skillset.
“As far as gameness and toughness and durability, he’s never had it, either. You crack him and he starts skating.
“I’m going to paint my Van Gogh on Gilbert’s face. Elbows, knees, kicks, takedown defense, takedown offense – all that good stuff. I’m going to bring it.”
