Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki fined $2.5K for cross-checking

Montreal Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki was fined $2,500 for a cross-check he delivered late in Thursday’s loss to the Florida Panthers.

With under three minutes to go in a wild 9-5 game, Suzuki and Lundell got into a shoving match in front of the Panthers bench. After both players cross-checked each other in the chest, Suzuki responded with one that connected with Lundell’s head. All the players on the ice got quickly involved and Suzuki was tackled to the ice by Panthers defenceman Marc Staal.

Suzuki was given a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for the cross-check and Canadiens defenceman Johnathan Kovacevic also received a 10-minute misconduct for his role in the play.

The money from the fine goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Suzuki leads the Canadiens in scoring with 21 goals and 51 points this season.

Montreal returns to the ice when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night as part of Hockey Night in Canada.
