Canucks seeing contributions from all levels as winning streak hits five

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Canucks have won five straight games because their best players have bought into coach Rick Tocchet’s meritocracy and defensive ideals, and are playing better, more complete hockey than they have all season.

This is vitally important, of course, for the organization. Whatever the Canucks do next season will be driven by Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, Andrei Kuzmenko and J.T. Miller, and goalie Thatcher Demko.

The buy-in at the bottom of the lineup was never a problem for Tocchet.

Really, those guys will try to do literally anything their coaches ask in pursuit National Hockey League jobs and paycheques. But actually doing it is a lot harder than wanting to do it. The NHL is a gigantic step up from anything else, including the American Hockey League and the Canucks’ farm team an hour up the road in Abbotsford.

In Tuesday’s 5-2 win against the Dallas Stars, an excellent playoff-bound team that was held to five third-period shots until a late power play, first-year forward Kuzmenko scored his 33^rd goal of the season for the Canucks. Brock Boeser had three assists, Miller a goal and one assist and Demko stopped 25 of 27 shots and continues to look reborn after missing three months with a groin injury. Hughes logged 24 minutes and Pettersson 22.

But Phil Di Giusseppe, who has spent as much of his 10-year pro career in the minors as the NHL, also scored for the Canucks while holding on to his second-line spot beside Miller and Boeser. Nils Aman, whose rookie season in North America took a month-long detour through Abbotsford, beautifully set up the first NHL goal for defenceman Guillaume Brisebois, another callup who has become an everyday player for the Canucks.

Callup Christian Wolanin’s shot was deflected into the Dallas net by Anthony Bauvillier, and another blue-liner from the AHL, Noah Juulsen, logged 17:22 of ice time, delivered the hit of the night on Luke Glendening and was praised post-game by Tocchet.

These contributions from the bottom of the lineup – from guys who spent most of this season in the AHL but look NHL-ready – is also critical to the Canucks because we’ve all learned that a few young stars aren’t nearly enough to make a team.

“I’ve got affection for those guys,” Tocchet said Tuesday. “Those guys are trying to make the NHL, right? They’ve bought-in right away. They’re not perfect, nobody’s perfect. But the next shift or the next practice, they pick themselves up. I love that about them.

“To win in this league, your bench has to contribute and we’re getting it from everybody.”

The points are a byproduct of the process. None of the six players in Tocchet’s lineup who spent much of this season in the minors torched the American League. But clearly, they learned to play under Abbotsford coaches Jeremy Colliton and Gary Agnew, and AHL GM Ryan Johnson’s player-development staff that includes Hall-of-Famers Daniel and Henrik Sedin.

“The message is to build your game,” Di Giuseppe said. “It’s not just about points or individual things, but kind of carving a role. And then somewhere down the line, there might be an opportunity.

“I think the biggest thing is when you get sent down, especially when you’re a younger guy like (Aman), it’s disappointing because obviously you want to be in the NHL. But I’ve learned you can take that time to dial in and treat it as if it’s a good thing because you’re getting better instead of staying stagnant. If you can just buy in and realize if you put together your game, later on it’s going to transition just like we’re seeing.”

“It’s hard to explain why and what helped me so much,” Aman, 23, said. “But coming down there, you play a lot of minutes and get a lot of puck touches and you just feel like you can do stuff. I feel much better. They stress a lot of responsibility to the players to do the right things when you’re out there, and if you’re not doing that, you’re not playing. You know what you get from every player when you play down there, and when they come up here, you know what they’re about.”

Brisebois is a 25-year-old who stuck with the Canucks through five pro seasons before earning his big chance with a recall from Abbotsford on Feb. 22. He is averaging 16:34 of ice time in 12 games and has become a key member of a resurgent penalty-killing unit.

He also just signed a two-year extension with the Canucks, as did Di Giuseppe.

“I think it’s the mentality that we have in Abbotsford,” Brisebois said when asked what is allowing a handful of players to simultaneously transition to the NHL. “It’s like new energy for the team. We’re just trying to make our spots (in the NHL) and we’re working really hard. Guys have been doing really great since they’ve been called up.”

He said the not-so-secret part of the formula is input from the Sedins, typically a daily staple of Abbotsford practices.

“They’ve been awesome with everyone, they include everyone, and they want the guys to succeed,” Brisebois said. “The way that they talk to you, the way they do video with you, they want you to succeed. I still think there’s a lot of guys in Abbotsford that could get their chance.”

The Canucks’ prospect pool isn’t nearly deep enough, which is why the organization must succeed more often than it fails on individual player development. Good prospects like defenceman Jack Rathbone, centre Aatu Raty and wingers Linus Karlsson and Nils Hoglander, who spent the last two seasons in the NHL, continue to build their games in Abbotsford.

“I think it’s great for the young guys in Abbotsford now, hearing and seeing things going on up here because it gives them confidence,” Di Giuseppe said. “It’s a big step, but if you can play the game, you can play the game, right? I think it gives guys confidence that. . . they’re not that far away.”
