Dawn Meats buys lamb firm HR Jasper & Son via Dunbia arm

Ireland-based meat processor Dawn Meats has struck a deal to buy HR Jasper & Son, a lamb abattoir based in England, through its Northern Ireland arm Dunbia.

The family-run abattoir in Cornwall employs 90 people. All staff will continue to work there following the deal, Dunbia said.

HR Jasper & Son, founded in 1930, processes up to 10,000 lambs per week, selling into wholesale, retail, foodservice and export markets.

Niall Browne, CEO at Dunbia, said: “The reputation and demand for high-quality West Country lamb is growing both within Britain and across Europe and we look forward to continuing to work with farmers in Cornwall and across the south west to promote this excellent product to both new and existing customers.”

This deal with the lamb business follows on from Dawn Meats previously purchasing the Jasper beef abattoir in Treburley, Cornwall in 2014.

“We have a proud history of providing great service to both our farmers and our customers and as the family now passes on the business, we are confident that Dunbia will continue that tradition,” said Keith Jasper, managing director of the Jasper company.

“We have been doing business with Dunbia for many years. It’s a family business like ours and has previous experience of acquiring and developing businesses in the West Country. Our family looks forward to continuing to work with Dunbia on the site.”

Financial details were not disclosed by either party.

Dunbia joined Dawn Meats when the latter took full control of a UK joint venture in July 2020.
