Much to the dismay of MLB fans, the infamous extra-inning runner rule is coming back for 2023 and is here to stay for the long run.
For context, this rule was added in 2020 during the COVID-shortened season and brought back for 2021 and 2022.
Fans were hoping that in 2023, things would finally get back to normal.
Unfortunately, the rule is coming back, and it will be in effect for the foreseeable future.
The rule will not be in effect for postseason games.
Many have voiced their displeasure over the constant reinstatement of the very controversial rule.
On Twitter, a journalist tweeted a link to the ESPN news story by Jesse Rogers and called the rule “an abomination.”

Unfortunately, this appears to be where baseball is headed for extra-inning games.
Granted, it may speed games up a little bit and shorten the length of each game that goes into extras.
But it’s still something that is not very popular among most MLB fans.
2019 was the last time that the game was played without the extra-inning runner.
What is also interesting is that the rule is in effect for regular season games only.
MLB has put plenty of emphasis on this rule and have clearly been in favor of it since its inception, but it leaves fans wondering why it isn’t used in the postseason if they are so intent on having the rule in effect.
Ultimately, it appears that the rule is now permanent and will not be going anywhere anytime soon, and fans will have to accept that harsh truth.
