Canada’s Fernandez falls to Garcia in second round of Australian Open


Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open losing 6-7 (5), 5-7 Thursday to Caroline Garcia of France.

Garcia, who is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, recorded 11 aces in the match compared to zero for Fernandez.

The 21-year-old from Laval, Que., defeated France’s Alizé Cornet 7-5, 6-2 in the first round Monday.

Later Thursday, No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal is scheduled to play Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the third round of the men’s tournament.

No. 20 Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., faces No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the third round Friday.
