Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback and 2000 Super Bowl champion Trent Dilfer is heading back to football.

And no, he’s not lacing up the cleats again.

UAB, or the University of Alabama at Birmingham, is getting a new coach in Dilfer.

Not only was Dilfer a Super Bowl champion in 2000 with the Ravens, but he played in the league for 14 seasons.

He certainly has proven his abilities on the field, but will his NFL playing days translate to coaching at the collegiate level?

Dilfer’s Coaching Credentials

Although he is experienced in playing in the NFL, Dilfer doesn’t have a lot of coaching experience.

In 2019, he accepted a job at a Christian school, Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, Tennessee as their head football coach.

In his three seasons at Lipscomb, Dilfer coached the team to a 26-8 record.

While he succeeded at the high school level, college is certainly a different game.

As we have seen recently with the hiring of Jeff Saturday as the coach of the Indianapolis Colts, UAB and Dilfer alike will likely undergo lots of scrutinies, given his lack of coaching credentials.

However, if UAB strings together a winning season, all doubters of Dilfer will be silenced.

Win or lose, Dilfer’s NFL experience will allow him to coach players at a higher level, and fill them in on what it is like to play football at the highest level.

Having an NFL veteran like Dilfer in the UAB locker room is bound to draw in various recruits from across the country.
