Tyler Glasnow, who is currently rehabbing a long-term injury, received some excellent financial news.

The Tampa Bay Rays, his team, offered him $25 million in exchange for his talents for the 2024 campaign, and he said yes.

The Rays are extending him beyond the 2023 season, in which he is slated to make a little over $5 million.

Tampa is, therefore, buying out his first season of free agency eligibility.

The pitcher could not be more excited about staying in the organization that believed in him and helped shape his talent after coming over from Pittsburgh.

“Glasnow on the appeal of signing with the Rays: ‘Since day one it’s where I wanted to be. The mentality of the organization. It’s an awesome work environment. They prioritize good people. Guys come over from other places and their first thing is ‘Is this real?!’ Yea it is,’” he said, according to Bally Sports’ Tricia Whitaker.

An Elite Pitcher With A Spotty Health Record

Glasnow showed, especially in 2019 and 2021, that he is a top-tier pitcher when healthy.

In 2019, he had a 1.78 ERA in 60.2 frames.

After a 4.08 ERA in 2020, the 2021 campaign was much better: he finished with a 2.66 ERA last season, in 88 frames.

He was on his way to competing for the Cy Young award when he blew up his arm and needed Tommy John surgery.

He is currently in the last stages of that recovery process, and could return to the Rays in some capacity in late September.

He is traditionally a starter, but building up his arm as a reliever could guarantee a quicker return to the active roster.

It will depend on what the Rays want to do with him, but his arm is talented enough to play anywhere.
